Calculator Methodology

GetFFMI uses three connected body composition calculators: Body Fat → Lean Body Mass → FFMI. The tools run in your browser, do not require an account, and are designed for practical tracking rather than medical diagnosis.

FFMI Calculator Method

FFMI starts with lean body mass, not total body weight. The calculator estimates lean body mass from weight and body fat percentage, then compares that lean mass against height.

FFMI: lean body mass in kilograms / height in meters squared.

Normalized FFMI: FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 - height in meters).

Normalized FFMI adjusts the score for height so very tall or short users can compare results more fairly. Body fat estimate accuracy matters because an underestimated body fat percentage can make lean mass and FFMI look higher than they really are.

Body Fat Calculator Method

The body fat calculator uses a Navy-style tape measurement method. For men, it uses height, neck, and waist. For women, it also uses hips.

This method estimates body fat from circumference measurements. It is fast, free, and more practical than visual guessing, but it is still an estimate rather than a medical scan.

Consistent measuring matters more than one perfect reading. Use the same tape locations, posture, and tape tension each time if you want useful trend data.

Lean Body Mass Calculator Method

Lean body mass: body weight × (1 - body fat percentage / 100).

Fat mass: body weight × body fat percentage / 100.

Lean body mass includes more than muscle. It also includes bone, organs, water, and other non-fat tissue. Because the calculation starts with body fat percentage, a rough body fat estimate creates a rough lean mass estimate too.

Important Limitations

All three calculators depend on input quality. If body fat percentage is off, lean body mass, fat mass, and FFMI will be off as well. Treat the result as useful context and progress-tracking data, not as a medical diagnosis or proof of natural status.

Male and female FFMI ranges are interpreted separately because average lean mass levels differ. A score that is moderate for a man may be very strong for a woman.

Formula Sources

FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) became widely known after research comparing fat-free mass levels between natural athletes and anabolic steroid users.

Raw FFMI alone can slightly favor taller or shorter individuals, which is why this calculator also shows normalized FFMI.

Normalized FFMI: FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 - height in meters)

The 6.1 adjustment helps normalize scores across different heights so comparisons are more fair.

These formulas are useful for context, but they are not a medical test. The biggest source of error is usually body fat percentage, because lean body mass is estimated from body weight and body fat.

Body Fat Method Limitations

A visual estimate, smart scale, calipers, DEXA scan, and Navy-style estimate can all give different body fat numbers. Even a small difference can change lean body mass and FFMI. For best results, use the same measurement method over time and focus on trends.

If your FFMI looks unusually high or changes suddenly, recheck height, weight, and body fat inputs before drawing conclusions.
